Facebook…

facebook logoIf you’re not on it, I just don’t know why… Of all the social networks - myspace is too messy, friendster’s too old-school, linked-in is a bit too business oriented, and google-sponsored socialstream is still just a dream - facebook is clean and it works well.

One in three Canadians use it, and Toronto has been reported to being the facebook capital of the world with 700,000 members (Although there are reports that London, England may be usurping the crown).

It seems like everytime I sneak a peak as I pass by laptops at the library, in coffeeshops, and at schools, people are staring at that classic facebook screen. Our provincial government recently banned facebook for all staff.

I’ve found that it’s been phenomenal for connecting with old friends, networking with peers, and being one-step closer to those who might have simply been acquaintances.

It’s also great if you’ve got question’s like…

Are the cool kids back in high school still cool?

Does this friend and that friend of mine know each other? because they should.

What are my co-workers really like outside of work? Photos posted by their friends usually tell all.

Is she still with him? Because I never thought that would last

Some call it stalker-central, others say it’s better than crack, if you’re a regular here, feel free to look me up.

My only concern is that one day it could come to this…

i facebooked your mom tshirt

I don’t think SocialStream is a dream. You can check out http://www.spokeo.com I think it greatly simplifies your life.

i’ve got a facebook account, not really addicted to it though.

Harrison

i am not addicted to it as well; in fact, i am not addicted to any social network even though i use a lot of them. i like to read my friends’ updates, but i don’t want to feel compelled to network with others all the times. Sometimes .. okay, all the time .. too much :)

Lon

Hey folks, thanks for tuning in, I don’t find it quite ‘addictive’ either, but i sure do enjoy staying connected with people… it seems to build the more folks you’re connected to.. but now i feel there’s so many it’s hard to know where to start and who to keep up with…

Harrison, what is spokeo? is it based on social stream?

Harrison

No, it’s not based on social stream. In fact, we came out with the social network aggregator concept 7 months ago. We found that our first UI was too complicated: it has sharing, messaging, blogging, and other features (like social stream) in there. Aggregators are about convenience and simplicity, and that’s why we released the current version, which is minimalist and only does one thing.

Spokeo now is a reader that tracks not only RSS, but also your friends on social networks. You can read our design philosophy on our blog: http://blog.spokeo.com/?p=7

Thanks for the info Harrison, i joined spokeo yesterday, i’ll definitely check it out some more…

Harrison

Thanx. If you got any question, the “feedback” button is big and obvious on the top.

By the way, I am pretty proud about our javascript skills in the buddy list :) You should check out the drag and drop (and no, it’s not from prototype) in the buddy list. It can even scroll the window. Anyway … enough geek talk.
